Trade Fairs In GermanyOur CEO, Monique Surges, has been travelling Europe for the last few weeks and certainly seems to be enjoying her stint in Germany – as the absence of phone calls and post cards with messages of home sickness testify! Apart from meeting with members, business partners and government Monique is also mingling with exhibitors and trade fair clients at the various trade fairs and reports that many companies have elected to take advantage of the opportunities offered in these economically challenging times:

  • The general economic downturn was not greatly in evidence during the world's biggest trade fair for the consumer-goods sector, Ambiente in Frankfrut am Main from 13 to 17 February. 135,000 trade fair visitors, 4,466 exhibitors from 86 countries.
  • Neither economic crisis nor continuous snowfall could keep the international organic experts away: 46,771 trade visitors poured into the exhibition centre in Nuernberg from 19 to 22 Feburary to take part in the 20th BioFach. The international share of visitors was 38% and buyers came from 129 countries. The premiere of a new textile area was also successful.
  • A total of 202,000 visitors came to Frankfurt am Main for the International leading trade fair ISH, which took place between 10-14 March. ISH is the world's most important trade fair for bathrooms, building engineering, energy engineering , air-conditioning technology and renewable energy use. According to surveys, this sector is resistant to the economic crisis. Approximately 45% of buyers visit the fair primarily owing to the range of solutions for efficient systems and renewable energies being showcased.
  • Trade visitor attendance remained high at ITB from 11 to 14 March in Berlin this year, proof of ITB's resilience even in economically difficult times.  "More market players visited the leading platform of the international travel industry than ever before. In times of rapid structural changes and highly competitive markets they focused on gaining a comprehensive market overview and on new business approaches. Thus, unlike many other industries, the travel sector is actively responding to the challenges We are delighted that there was an increase in visitors from abroad" said Dr. Christian Goeke, Chief Operating Officer of Messe Berlin.

Please contact Monique on her return to New Zealand next week for further information on trade fairs in Germany and/or to find out how you can be involved.

Kind regards

National Power Conference 2009

11th Annual National Power Conference 2009

Despite global doom and gloom, CEOs, government and scientists appeared to be optimistic during the 11th National Power Conference in Auckland this past February. The energy conference focused on future national projects in renewable resources and potential possibilities to export the country's broad natural resources. The new government aims to establish an energy strategy that meets environmental standards, considers the energy's affordability and maximises economic growth. While nuclear energy is not a viable option for National, gas resources and hydro energy should play a more crucial role in the country's energy supply. Solid Energy is building a coal-fired power plant in Southland and emphasises New Zealand's advantage of rich natural resources which will help the country to overcome the economic downturn. The International Energy Agency judges New Zealand's approach in the field of renewables very positively.
